About Solomon's Mines

Solomon's Mines - A Duty Free Paradise.

Two Solomon brothers originally established their retail business in 1908.

It was a tobacconist shop called Pipe of Peace, in a wooden one-story building with a tin roof, at the present location of the Watch Department in the Solomon's Mines Flagship Store on Bay Street. The business remained a one-shop retail operation until after World War I, when an insurance agency was started and distribution rights to the Nestle's and Lever Brothers product lines were secured. The expansion program began after World War II, when Mr. Fane Solomon and his late cousin, Roy Solomon, established a bona fide wholesale operation behind the Pipe of Peace shop.

Solomon Mines opened on Bay Street in 1983 and in Marsh Harbour 1985.

In 1999, considerable effort and expense was undertaken to modernize Solomon's Mines Flagship store and retail offices located at 324 Bay Street in downtown Nassau. This complex continues to promote adventurous modern retailing in luxury brand name goods, in jewelry, watches crystal and china by the addition of various world famous boutiques within the store, such as: Lladro, Lalique, Baccarat, Swarovski, Salvatore Ferragamo, Longchamp and more. This leading retail store was the first to provide a self-service Perfumery in the Caribbean.

In December 1998, two new stores were added to the luxury division when the Salvatore Ferragamo Boutique and Lalique Boutique were unveiled at the Grand Opening of the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. In March 1999, a Kabana Boutique was launched in the Lobby of the Royal Towers at the Atlantis Resort, making a total of four stores within the Atlantis Resort & Casino complex.

In September 1999, Hurricane Floyd hit the Bahamas and severely damaged the physical facilities of the Pipe of Peace at Hurricane Hole Shopping Plaza, Pipe of Peace Treasure Cay and Solomon's Mines Treasure Cay. The two Pipe of Peace souvenir stores were permanently closed. The Solomon's Mines building in Treasure Cay was completely remodeled and the retail portion was re-opened in time for Christmas 2000. The store now enhances the Treasure Cay Resort by providing an upscale ladies boutique, jewelry, watches, perfume and souvenir selections for residents and visitors.

To celebrate the changes and accomplishments of Solomon's Mines (1984) Ltd., a grand Christmas Extravaganza was presented on November 8, 1999 at the Main Solomon's Mines Store on Bay Street. The store windows and balconies were designed with the theme of "The Nutcracker Suite" using moving mechanical figures. Again, this event set the company apart as retail's leader and is sure to be talked about for years as Solomon's Mines Ltd. forges ahead into the new Millennium.

During the fall of 2000, the Retail Division underwent substantial renovations. The original Pipe of Peace (1908), adjacent to Solomon's Mines on Bay Street, was closed in August 2000. The facilities were fully converted to an ultra new Watch Department. The completion of the new Watch Department was the final phase of the new mega store design. Solomon's Mines 324 Bay Street is now a full service luxury location and can complete with any luxury retailer worldwide.

In August of 2002, Solomon's Mines and Norman Solomon (brother of the late Roy Solomon, who help started the wholesale operation after World War II) announced a merger between their companies. Norman Solomon's Mademoiselle, Faconnable and Royal Palm Trading stores added eight new locations to the Solomon's Mines retail network. The merger, which was completed by the end of September 2002, has enabled the merged group to better serve the customers desiring a wide range of luxury goods.

In 2004, Solomon's Mines was acquired by Garet "Tiger" Finlayson. Earlier that year, the company expanded to Freeport with the opening of two new stores. In December of 2004, the company continued to expand with the opening of a store in the Mall at Marathon.

May 2005, marked the opening of the Solomon's Mines Signature Collection Store on Bay and Charlotte Street. In July 2005, the company opened a store in the Cave Village on western end of the island. Also in 2005, the company opened the Bally Boutique in the Prince George Plaza on Bay Street and three store in the Atlantis Marina Village: Solomon's Mines Sea Treasures, Royal Palm Trading Co. and Sunglass Shack.
